About Sangeeta Babani’s art:
Raised in Spain, Sangeeta’s musings veer from figurative realistic to semi-abstract depiction, landscape to abstraction as the mood takes her. There are no straight answers and that is the beauty of life, is her firm belief and this philosophy is celebrated in her canvases with an exuberance of colour and emotion.
Characterised by an ambiguity, simultaneously introspective and impressionist in nature, her paintings come alive with vibrant hues and multiple thoughts. She explores various subjects, all of which touch upon different aspects of life. As such, interpretation becomes subjective and distinct from one viewer to another.
“For me art is autobiographical”, says the artist, “as it comes from within; but if it’s too realistic, it fails to trigger the imagination of the onlooker”, she continues. Her canvases come alive with bright, abstract and quirky imagery, with themes like love and womanhood that tend to recur in her work. Celebrating life’s day-to-day occurrences, culture, cities, intersections of places and time, she conjures up memories, thoughts, opinions, stories that inspire her to step into another world of colour, canvas, rhythmic strokes and storytelling.
“A blank canvas… has unlimited possibilities. The nothingness of the beginning is so simple and breathtakingly pure. It’s the paint that changes its meaning and the hand that creates the story”, she concludes.
